Bimini is a chain of islands on the westernmost point of the Bahamas and is only 50 miles off the coast of Miami.

We recently visited these islands, and while we only had a few days to explore, our adventure was full of excitement, from diving with reef sharks to exploring the SS Sapona and much more.

Getting to Bimini - Flying vs Ferry

Flying

Flying to Bimini is the quickest route, with flights from Fort Lauderdale taking about 30 minutes and landing at the airport in South Bimini. 

From there, you can take a local taxi to the ferry that transports passengers from South Bimini to North Bimini, the main island. 

The taxi ride from the airport is about 10 minutes, and the ferry ride between the islands is literally 2 minutes. However, be prepared for variable pricing, as locals charge tourists randomly, which can seem like an attempt to rip off visitors.

On the other hand, taking a ferry from Miami or Fort Lauderdale, though more expensive, offers a leisurely and scenic approach. 

The ferry ride lasts approximately two hours, allowing passengers to soak in ocean views and enjoy the fresh sea breeze, often with amenities such as refreshments and entertainment. 

Both options have their unique advantages, catering to different preferences for speed, comfort, and experience. If you aren’t in a rush, I would definitely recommend taking your time and using the ferry - you’ll see a lot more, and it’s more relaxing as long as the sea isn’t rough.

This obviously depends on where you’re traveling from as well, in a lot of cases taking a plane journey is more convenient.

The best time to visit Bimini 

The best time to visit Bimini, Bahamas, is during the winter and spring months, from mid-December to mid-April.

During this period, the weather is typically warm and sunny with lower humidity, making it perfect for beach activities, diving, and exploring the islands. 

Additionally, this timeframe falls outside the hurricane season, which runs from June to November, reducing the risk of weather-related disruptions to your travel plans, which can happen all too often and cause a lot of stress.

Where to stay - Airbnb vs Resorts

When deciding between staying at an Airbnb or one of the resorts in Bimini, each option has distinct advantages. 

Resorts in Bimini are predominantly located in the northern part of the island, offering luxurious amenities, private beaches, and a range of services designed to provide a seamless vacation experience. However, these resorts tend to be more isolated and expensive than Airbnb.

On the other hand, Airbnb accommodations offer a more affordable and immersive experience, allowing visitors to stay in local neighborhoods and enjoy a more authentic taste of island life.

It all comes down to what you value:

• If you prefer the amenities that come with hotels and value privacy and luxury above all else, then staying in a resort is the best option.

• Airbnbs, on the other hand, are more suited for budget trips and offer a more authentic experience.

Both are great options and no matter which one you choose, you can always experience the perks of the other during your trip.

Getting around the island 

Getting around Bimini is part of its charm, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. 

Renting a golf cart is highly recommended, and it is an enjoyable way to explore the island.

On a typical day, the island feels serene and laid-back, with quiet streets and a relaxed atmosphere. However, this changes dramatically when a cruise ship arrives, bringing an influx of tourists that temporarily energizes the island with activity and excitement. 

Keep this in mind when traveling around as it can get hectic, even if you’re using a golf cart.

Eating Out On Bimini

Despite the occasional bustle, Bimini doesn't have many restaurants, but it offers some dining spots. One of the most popular restaurants is Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina, which is known for its delicious seafood. 

Many street vendors are spotted around the islands who offer delicious food as well.

For an added thrill, I recommend heading down to the Marina after dinner, where you can spot bull sharks swimming around, offering a close encounter with Bimini’s fascinating marine life.

Feeding Stingrays at Honeymoon Harbour, Bimini

One of the most memorable activities in Bimini is feeding the stingrays at Honeymoon Harbour. 

Located on the southern tip of Gun Cay, a short boat ride from Bimini, Honeymoon Harbour is a picturesque spot known for its crystal-clear waters and friendly stingrays. 

As you wade into the shallow waters, you'll be surrounded by these graceful creatures, gliding effortlessly around you. If you haven’t experienced this before, it’s something you need to do during your trip.

Swimming with Caribbean Reef Sharks 

For those seeking a more adrenaline-pumping experience, swimming with Caribbean Reef Sharks is a must-do in Bimini. This exhilarating activity takes you to the deeper waters around the island, where you can dive or snorkel among these magnificent predators. 

Under the guidance of experienced instructors, you'll observe the sharks in their natural environment, witnessing their power and beauty up close. This adventure is about the thrill and understanding of the critical role sharks play in maintaining the health of ocean ecosystems.

This is obviously more suited to people who are comfortable diving, but I highly recommend it if you have the experience.

Exploring the wreck of SS Sapona 

Exploring the wreck of the SS Sapona is a fascinating dive into history and adventure. The SS Sapona, a concrete-hulled cargo ship that ran aground near Bimini during a hurricane in 1926, now lies in shallow waters, making it accessible to both divers and snorkelers. 

The site is a favorite spot for underwater photography, offering stunning visuals that capture the eerie charm of the sunken vessel, and it’s great for both experienced photographers and novices.

Searching for wild dolphins 

Bimini is renowned for its opportunities to encounter wild dolphins, making it a prime destination for marine enthusiasts. The adventure begins with a boat trip into the open waters, guided by experts who know the best spots to find these playful creatures.

As you glide through the waves, the anticipation builds until you finally spot a pod of dolphins swimming gracefully around the boat. Snorkeling with these intelligent animals is an unforgettable experience, as they often approach swimmers with curiosity and playfulness.

However, it is physically challenging, requiring you to gear up, wait for the captain's signal, and jump into the water on command. Sometimes, you may need to repeat this process three to four times before interacting with the dolphins - so don’t expect this to be as easy as you might expect.

Observing wild dolphins in their natural habitat is both exhilarating and educational, emphasizing the importance of preserving their environment.

Bimini is a wonderful destination that offers a unique blend of relaxation and adventure.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, finding that a week was the perfect amount of time to relax, explore the island, and experience all the highlights Bimini has to offer.
